Google Wallet mobile payment system announced

Google has officially announced their mobile payment service. The NFC-based Google Wallet service has partnered with many retailers including Subway, Macy’s, Walgreens, Toy ‘R US, First Data, Citibank, and MasterCard. Google is also partnered with Sprint on the carrier side and being partnered with MasterCard means that Google Wallet is fully compatible with PayPass contactless payment system that is already in place around the nation. There are trials running in New York and San Fransisco and by summer it will be fully launched. The Sprint Nexus 4G will be the first phone compatible with the system but overtime more phones will be added to the list. Google has suggested that phones without an NFC sticker could work with an addition of the sticker. You must use a Citi, MasterCard or Google Prepaid card with the service but overtime more ways to add funds will come. Google also announced Google Offers, which will send an “offer of the day” to your inbox and let you find offers from retailers. It is tied in with Google Wallet and you will be able to redeem offers and receive rewards from retailers through this feature. Mobile payments and offers are just the beginning to this project we could see this service being used as a boarding pass, tickets, and IDs.
